Please Do Not ignore the students
These days, two chief executive hopefuls, Henry Tang and CY Leung have been visiting different sectors and attending numerous functions to gain support. It is encouraging that both of them endeavour to win support from different sectors. Yet, they seem to be neglecting the students, who have been suffering from the stressful and endless education reforms and cannot cast a vote to show their choice.
Education reforms have been being carried out for years, affecting a large number of people, not only the students, but also the teachers and parents. Most of the stakeholders have been under great pressure in confronting the ever-changing reforms. Teachers find it difficult to follow the instructions, and parents feel stressful in the light of their poor sons and children, who have been directly influenced by any education reforms but never been consulted.
The students have been ignored for years too. The crux of the situation lied in their lack of voting right, or discourse power in the Election Committee. A recent survey conducted by Takungpao revealed that candidates sitting for HKDSE are under severe pressure, and only 18% of students are confident of sitting for the HKDSE. This is a wake-up for the two hopefuls that they should pay serious attention to the matters related to education system. It is not demanded that they order a halt to every reform, but it is imperative that they take the students’ feelings into deep consideration before devising any new policy and making any decision in the future. Otherwise, the impact will be irrevocable and the quality of our students will certainly decline under such circumstance.
If the hopefuls are really serving Hong Kong and hoping Hong Kong to be a better place, they should attend to the problem and think of some solutions to alleviate, if not solve, the frustrating situation. It is hoped that they will practise what they have preached.
