Completely Rubbish?
(21/09/2011)
When you read this title, what comes to your mind immediately? The answer is doubtless Henry Tang. He answered “I think that is completely rubbish that we have violated civil rights……” when he was asked about his opinion towards the saying that the police has violated the human rights and the freedom of speech. His response has aroused a bone of contention over his grammar and choices of words.
Let’s shun the question of grammar first. What I want to say is that, there are some words which are better than “ completely rubbish”, aren’t there? I wonder why Henry Tang could air his view nonsensically one after another. Have he thought clearly before he voiced his reflection? It seemed that he has never thought carefully.
Henry’s case is just a tip of iceberg. We have John Tsang, Financial Secretary of HKSAR, thanking a Hongkonger for his loudness when the Hongkonger confronted him about the so-called advantages of the political reform package. Donald Tsang often pulls a long face whenever journalists or the LegCo councilors ask him awkward question
These incidents show our officials lack the ability to control their emotions and deal with a contingency or emergency. When Hong Kong has not reverted to China, the delegated officials of Britain gave Hongkongers a impression that they are at the prominent positions. They also administered Hong Kong well, therefore Hongkongers didn’t nurse many grievances. While the officials after reversion of Hong Kong, however, have been administering Hong Kong moderately, as well as answering questions and doubts adversely.
Answering in such a bad word choices will do nothing but worsen their own images, as well as the government’s reputation. We citizens cannot but have a bad feeling towards the government.
Hence, I suggest holding a compulsory lessons teaching how to control emotion and answer question politely and precisely for every civil servant reaching a specified class (e.g. D8). The situation will certainly be improved then. Otherwise, comments like “completely rubbish” will only emerge one after another, thus adversely affecting the governance of Hong Kong.
